With the smash-hit release of Deadpool & Wolverine, Citizen has capitalized on the buzz by launching two character-inspired timepieces that are as bold and beloved as the movie itself. These watches dedicated to Wolverine and Deadpool capture the spirit of the characters and offer fans a stylish way to celebrate their favorite Marvel heroes.

Designer: Citizen

The Wolverine watch is a powerful statement piece, designed to reflect the essence of Logan himself. With a 43mm black ion-plated stainless steel case, it’s as rugged as the character it represents. The blue dial, accented with luminous retractable claws, draws immediate attention, while a yellow outer ring and silver-tone markers add depth and contrast. Luminous hands make it easy to read at a glance, day or night.

Adding a touch of fandom, the X-Men logo proudly marks the 12 o’clock position, and the case back features the iconic “SNIKT!” sound that every Wolverine fan knows by heart. But this watch isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s powered by Citizen’s Eco-Drive technology, and it runs on light, eliminating the need for a battery. It’s a perfect blend of form, function, and fanfare.

If Wolverine’s watch is fierce, the Here Comes Deadpool watch is nothing short of cheeky. This timepiece captures Deadpool’s irreverent spirit with a 42mm black ion-plated stainless steel case and a black textured dial that humorously features Deadpool’s masked face upside down at the 12 o’clock mark. Surrounding this playful design is a red dial ring, emblazoned with “Merc With a Mouth,” which lights up alongside the hands, markers, and Deadpool’s eyes, making this watch impossible to ignore.

The black leather strap, with its red topstitching, perfectly matches Deadpool’s signature colors. Flip it over, and you’ll find an engraving of Deadpool in a relaxed, reclining pose. A perfect example of his trademark humor. And like the Wolverine watch, it’s powered by Eco-Drive technology, ensuring it stays as irrepressible as its namesake.

While both watches share the same innovative technology, their differences are what make them stand out. With its larger 43mm case, the Wolverine watch features a simple date complication and a protective crown guard. In contrast, the 42mm Here Comes Deadpool watch offers both day and date complications and a sleek, guardless crown. The Deadpool watch also comes with a 20mm leather strap, while Wolverine’s timepiece sports a 22mm width bracelet, echoing Logan’s rugged style.

For those who love luminous features, each watch has its own unique light show. The Here Comes Deadpool watch is all about fun, with Deadpool’s eyes, indices, hands, and the “Merc With a Mouth” text lighting up the night. Meanwhile, the Wolverine watch uses lume to highlight its retractable claws motif and the X-Men logo, staying true to its fierce inspiration.

Despite their striking designs and advanced features, these timepieces remain surprisingly affordable. The Wolverine Edition is priced at $425, while the Here Comes Deadpool watch is available for $350. Perhaps it’s Deadpool’s idea of a joke that his watch is the cheaper of the two, but both offer tremendous value for fans and collectors alike.

Hands-On with the Rolex Le Mans Daytona: Experiencing a Century of Racing Legacy

Happy Wristwatch Wednesday! Boy, do I have a treat for you today. Over the weekend, as a guest of Rolex at Monterey Car Week, I had the rare opportunity to see and briefly try on the Rolex Le Mans Daytona. This was an encounter with a piece of history, capturing Rolex’s long-standing relationship with motorsport, especially the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans. The experience was made even more special knowing that the watch I tried on belongs to an owner and is the only one in all of Argentina, adding a unique layer of exclusivity to the moment.

Designer: Rolex

When I first laid eyes on the Le Mans edition, it was impossible not to be drawn to its unique details that set it apart from any other Daytona. The “100” marker on the bezel immediately caught my attention, a subtle yet powerful tribute to the 24 Hours of Le Mans centenary. This watch is a celebration of an iconic moment in motorsport history.

The dial, with its clean layout and striking red accents, evokes the spirit of the race. The subtle red details, while understated, carry a certain weight, reminding me of the legendary teams that have graced the track at Le Mans. The watch’s overall design is unmistakably Daytona, but it has nuances only a true enthusiast would fully appreciate.

Rolex

The sub-dials on the Rolex Le Mans Daytona are a defining feature, reflecting its historical roots and homage to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Unlike traditional Daytona models, this edition features sub-dials with a layout reminiscent of the classic Daytona models from the 1960s, particularly the black and white “panda” dial design that has become iconic among collectors. However, what truly distinguishes these sub-dials is their functionality. Powered by the exclusive caliber 4132, these sub-dials include a chronograph function that tracks hours over an entire 24-hour period rather than the standard 12-hour format. This feature directly ties the watch to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, allowing it to track the entire race duration. This innovation adds practicality and historical significance to the timepiece.

The Rolex Le Mans Daytona, introduced in 2023 to mark the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, is a tribute to endurance racing’s storied legacy. The “100” marker on the bezel, the red accents, and the solid 18-karat white gold case collectively honor a century of motorsport excellence.

Rolex

When I had the watch on my wrist, I first noticed its weight—a substantial, reassuring presence that speaks to Rolex’s impeccable craftsmanship. The 18-karat white gold case feels substantial, as it should for a piece honoring such a historic event. The size strikes a perfect balance, being noticeable without overpowering the wrist, making it wearable yet distinctive.

The sensation of the watch on my wrist was a revelation—solid yet comfortable, with a subtle and bold presence. The bracelet, seamlessly integrated with the case, fits snugly, reinforcing the sense that this watch is built to last, much like the cars that compete in the endurance race it celebrates.

Through the sapphire case back, the movement of the Rolex Le Mans Daytona reveals a unique feature that sets this timepiece apart from its predecessors. This original edition is powered by the caliber 4132, a movement specifically adapted for the Le Mans Daytona. While this movement is an adaptation of the caliber 4131 found in other modern Daytonas, it includes a 24-hour chronograph function rather than the standard 12-hour format. This modification is a deliberate nod to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, allowing the watch to track time over the full duration of the race.

Rolex

This innovation enhances the watch’s functionality for those involved in endurance racing and underscores Rolex’s commitment to creating timepieces that resonate deeply with the events they commemorate. The ability to measure time over a full day is a fitting tribute to the endurance and perseverance required to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, making the Le Mans Daytona a true symbol of the race’s enduring legacy.

Wearing the Le Mans Daytona, even for a brief moment, was a powerful reminder of why Rolex has remained at the pinnacle of horology. Nearly a decade ago, as an automotive journalist at an epic event with Audi during their last Le Mans race, I was privileged to drive the new S4 on the track right before qualifications, pushing it as hard as it would go. The brief time I had the Le Mans Daytona on my wrist brought that moment rushing back, and I felt more alive than ever.

A Special Cosmograph Daytona 100TH Anniversary of Le Mans Model

As I left Monterey Car Week, I couldn’t help but reflect on the legacy of the Le Mans Daytona. This watch carries a rich history, crafted to honor one of the most legendary races in the world. For those who appreciate the finer details in life, the Le Mans Daytona reflects the enduring spirit of Rolex and the world of motorsport.

As a guest of Rolex at the 2024 Concours d’Elegance during Monterey Car Week, I experienced a seamless blend of history and innovation against the picturesque setting of Pebble Beach. The event showcased classic and contemporary automotive art, with Rolex’s influence evident throughout, reflecting their commitment to precision, tradition, and forward-thinking design. From meticulously restored vintage cars to unveiling futuristic designs, the festivities highlighted Rolex’s dedication to craftsmanship and innovation. My time there deepened my appreciation for the artistry in automotive design and emphasized Rolex’s role in linking the past, present, and future of motoring. In the following discussion, I’ll explore how Rolex’s legacy continues to shape the world of motorsport and automotive culture, as I experienced firsthand at this year’s memorable festivities.

Designer: Rolex

Rolex: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Innovation

Rolex embodies luxury, precision, and lasting craftsmanship. Founded by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London in 1905, it has evolved into a global icon. Originally known as Wilsdorf & Davis, the company specialized in distributing timepieces before focusing on manufacturing.

Rolex: The first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch by Rolex in 1926.

In 1908, Rolex was registered, and Wilsdorf set out to create elegant and reliable wristwatches. This pursuit led to developing the first waterproof wristwatch, the Rolex Oyster, in 1926. The Oyster case was a groundbreaking innovation, protecting the watch’s movement from dust, moisture, and pressure, ensuring its accuracy even in challenging conditions.

Innovation continued with the introduction of the Perpetual rotor in 1931, the world’s first self-winding mechanism powered by the natural motion of the wrist. This advancement set Rolex apart in the luxury watch market, marking another significant milestone in horology.

Rolex’s drive for precision is evident in its rigorous testing processes. Every Rolex watch undergoes stringent tests for accuracy, water resistance, and endurance, earning the brand its reputation for reliability. Certified as Superlative Chronometers by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), these timepieces highlight Rolex’s dedication to exceptional performance.

Over the decades, Rolex has introduced pioneering innovations that have solidified its reputation in watchmaking. In 1945, Rolex unveiled the Datejust, the first wristwatch to display the date on the dial, marking a significant leap forward in both functionality and design. The Submariner followed in 1953 as the first dive watch to be waterproof to a depth of 100 meters, made possible by the robust Oyster case—a marvel of engineering that ensures the watch’s durability and water resistance under extreme conditions.

Rolex also revolutionized the watch bracelet with the introduction of the Oyster bracelet, known for its strength and comfort, and the Jubilee bracelet, which combines style and flexibility, offering unmatched wearability. In recent years, Rolex introduced the Oysterflex bracelet, a sophisticated combination of flexible titanium and nickel alloy metal blade covered with high-performance elastomer, providing a new level of comfort without sacrificing durability.

Today, Rolex leads the world of luxury and precision, with each watch representing a blend of cutting-edge technology and timeless design. The brand’s legacy thrives on relentless innovation, uncompromising quality, and an enduring pursuit of perfection.

Rolex’s Timeless Connection with Motorsport

In the 1930s, Sir Malcolm Campbell, the renowned British racing driver known as the “King of Speed,” forged a powerful connection between high-speed racing and precision timekeeping. On Sept. 3, 1935, at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, Campbell made history by becoming the first person to break the 300 mph barrier, reaching 301.13 mph. During this groundbreaking feat, he relied on the Rolex Oyster. This watch demonstrated remarkable resilience and accuracy under extreme conditions, marking the beginning of a lasting bond between motorsport and Rolex.

At the time of Sir Malcolm Campbell’s record-breaking feats, the Rolex Oyster was still establishing its reputation. Campbell’s choice of the Rolex Oyster during his high-speed attempts significantly contributed to proving its reliability. His successes, supported by the watch’s consistent performance during these demanding moments, played a crucial role in forging Rolex’s longstanding association with motorsport. This partnership began a deep connection between Rolex and the world of speed, precision, and endurance.

In 1959, Rolex became the official timekeeper for the newly established Daytona International Speedway, cementing its role in motorsport. This partnership eventually led to the creation of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph in 1963, later famously known as the ‘Daytona.’ The watch was designed specifically for racing drivers, featuring a tachymetric scale on the bezel that allowed drivers to measure average speed over a specific distance—a crucial function in motorsports.

The Daytona’s design and functionality made it a legend in the racing world, and its connection to the speedway secured Rolex’s place in motorsport history. The watch became an icon cherished by racing enthusiasts and collectors. Over the years, Rolex’s involvement in motorsport deepened, particularly in endurance racing.

The Rolex 24 at Daytona is a grueling 24-hour endurance race that pushes drivers and machines to their limits. In 1992, Rolex became the title sponsor, reinforcing its commitment to precision and performance. This race demands unwavering focus and high-speed consistency, with drivers rotating through shifts to keep their cars moving. The parallels between this endurance and the reliability expected from Rolex watches are clear—both are engineered to perform under pressure, whether on the track or in daily life, reflecting the brand’s dedication to durability and precision.

Endurance races like the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans challenge drivers and vehicles alike, requiring intense stamina and flawless reliability. These events demand high performance from every component, with drivers battling fatigue and maintaining focus under extreme conditions. Similarly, Rolex mechanical watches are designed to endure, keeping precise time through years of use and the rigors of daily wear. This shared commitment to enduring performance solidifies Rolex’s role in motorsport, where reliability is paramount.

Image: Rolex

Rolex expanded its involvement in endurance racing further in 2001 when it became the Official Timepiece of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the world’s most famous and challenging races. The winners of Le Mans receive a specially engraved Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, a highly coveted prize that symbolizes both endurance and excellence.

In 2016, Rolex became the Official Timepiece of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), strengthening its role in endurance racing. This partnership reflects Rolex’s support for the evolution of endurance racing and its focus on technological innovation, a value shared by the WEC.

Rolex’s Enduring Influence at Monterey Car Week and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Monterey Car Week traces its roots to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which debuted in 1950 alongside the Pebble Beach Road Race. From modest beginnings, it has grown into the world’s most prestigious gathering of automotive artistry, attracting premier collectors, fans, and enthusiasts globally. This event honors and preserves automotive heritage, showcasing vehicles that illustrate the highest standards of design and engineering. This year, the coveted Best in Show winner receives the new Rolex 1908, a timepiece that reflects both the event’s tradition and Rolex’s enduring dedication to quality and innovation.

Image: Rolex

In 1997, Rolex became the official timepiece of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, establishing a partnership that bridges the worlds of watchmaking and automotive history. Rolex’s involvement extends to other hallmark events, such as The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

At The Quail presents a curated mix of vintage and modern vehicles in a more intimate setting, reflecting Rolex’s enduring commitment to celebrating and honoring automotive traditions.

Meanwhile, historic race cars are brought back to life on the track at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Rolex underscores the importance of authenticity and the preservation of motorsport history.

Hurley Haywood is regarded as one of the most accomplished endurance racers in history. His illustrious career includes five overall victories at the Rolex 24 at Daytona (1973, 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1991), showcasing his dominance in one of motorsport’s most grueling endurance races. In addition to his successes at Daytona, Haywood also claimed victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times (1977, 1983, and 1994), and he won the 12 Hours of Sebring twice (1973 and 1981).

Hurley Haywood at the Corkscrew of Laguna Seca

Hurley Haywood’s legendary racing career, marked by numerous victories, makes him the perfect namesake for the Hurley Haywood Trophy at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. This award honors drivers who embody Haywood’s skill and dedication, aligning with Rolex’s values of precision and performance. As a Rolex Testimonee, Haywood’s association reinforces Rolex’s commitment to motorsport excellence. Beyond his personal achievements, Haywood has mentored the next generation of drivers, sharing his knowledge and passion. The Hurley Haywood Trophy celebrates his legacy and the broader history of motorsport, further solidifying the deep connection between Rolex and the racing community.

Wrapping Up

Rolex’s presence in motorsport and classic cars goes beyond the surface, symbolizing a deep-seated commitment to precision and excellence. The brand has become synonymous with achievement and timeless craftsmanship, from its early partnership with legendary drivers to its pivotal role in events like the Rolex 24 at Daytona and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. By maintaining a balance between innovation and tradition, Rolex upholds its reputation across generations. Whether on a driver’s wrist or marking time at a prestigious event, Rolex stands as a lasting emblem of dedication to the highest standards.

The Omega x Swatch Snoopy MoonSwatch editions—”New Moon” and “Full Moon”—offer a unique blend of design and functionality inspired by space exploration. These non-limited timepieces, crafted from Swatch’s innovative Bioceramic material, feature distinct color schemes and detailed moon phase complications.

Designer: Swatch x Omega

The ‘New Moon’ edition, which is the topic of our Wristwatch Wednesday discussion, is rendered in a deep black hue and captures the mystique of the hidden aspects of the lunar cycle. The ‘Full Moon’ edition, in contrast, features a pristine white color, echoing the luminous surface of a full moon. Each watch is adorned with a moon phase complication at the 2 o’clock position, where Snoopy, along with Woodstock, adds a whimsical yet significant nod to the lunar theme. The moon phase complication not only adds aesthetic value but also provides an additional layer of functionality, making these watches more than just timepieces—they’re storytelling devices. The discussion of the Full Moon, aka White Snoopy edition, is saved for another discussion. Let’s dive into why I’m 100% positive that I made the right decision to go with it.

MISSION TO THE MOONPHASE – NEW MOON

The ‘New Moon’ edition, our focus for this Wristwatch Wednesday, sports a deep black hue that captures the mystique of the lunar cycle’s hidden aspects. Its counterpart, the ‘Full Moon’ edition, presents a pristine white color reminiscent of a luminous full moon. Both watches feature a moon phase complication at the 2 o’clock position, where Snoopy and Woodstock add a whimsical yet meaningful nod to the lunar theme. This complication transforms the watches into captivating storytelling devices, enhancing their aesthetic appeal while offering practical functionality. We’ll explore the Full Moon (aka White Snoopy) edition another time. For now, let’s delve into why I’m absolutely convinced I made the right choice with the New Moon edition.

MISSION TO THE MOONPHASE – FULL MOON

Before we dive in, let me share how I stumbled upon the holy trinity of moon phase Moonswatches. A week ago, I took a trip to Austin, TX—home to one of only nine Swatch boutiques selling the Super Blue Moonswatch. After making my purchase, I casually mentioned to the store manager, “Boy, I sure wish I could still get my hands on the black and white Snoopy Moonswatch!”

Omega x Swatch MISSION TO THE SUPER BLUE MOONPHASE

Then, it was as if the clouds parted above me and the moon, sun, and stars aligned when these words came out of my new best friend’s mouth: “The shipment arrives tomorrow and you can buy both.”

It took me a moment to process the situation. My flight back to Dallas was in 90 minutes, and I remembered my fruitless treks between Swatch boutiques in Tokyo and Nagoya, where I was dismissed with a mere “good luck getting one.” I faced a dilemma: should I stay the night and possibly camp out on the sidewalk by the boutique (Austin PD permitting), or fly home and return for a road trip? Given my long search for these rare pieces—rare, yet still attainable, unlike the limited Super Blue Moonphase—I knew they’d continue to be sold. But here’s the kicker: Swatch doesn’t display them on the floor. You must ask for them specifically. So I did, and before I knew it, I was embarking on a 6-hour round-trip back to Austin the next day to snag these beauties. Was it worth it? Absolutely.

Now, let’s explore the striking dark dial that defines this watch’s unique design. Its matte finish adds visual depth, creating a subtle contrast with the understated moon phase complication. This clever design choice makes Snoopy appear to leap off the dial, bringing the lunar theme to life. The hands and hour markers are coated with Super-LumiNova, ensuring visibility in low-light conditions—a nod to the watch’s space exploration inspiration. These elements showcase the meticulous attention to detail that Omega and Swatch have poured into this collaboration.

In contrast to the white Snoopy edition, the black one showcases practicality with its dark, Gotham-esque theme. This is especially noticeable in the straps—though I’ll admit, it’s the strap design, not the overall look, that I’m not particularly keen on. I’ve never been a fan of Velcro in any form, including those ’80s Velcro shoes.

Both the ‘New Moon’ and ‘Full Moon’ editions come with Velcro straps, which are lightweight and comfortable but also highly durable. The ‘New Moon’ edition features a black Velcro strap, while the ‘Full Moon’ comes with a white Velcro strap, each complementing the watch’s overall color scheme. The straps are also designed for ease of use, allowing quick adjustments for a perfect fit, and are well-suited for everyday wear, ensuring the watch stays secure on the wrist during various activities.

As for my personal preference, I found a $12 strap (multiple straps) on Amazon that offers both a premium look and feel. It features perfectly fitted lugs and a matching black tang buckle, tying everything together nicely. In my opinion, this strap looks and feels significantly more cohesive and comfortable than the original.

The watch’s case measures 42mm in diameter, making it versatile for a wide range of wrist sizes. Its Bioceramic material offers both eco-friendliness and a unique tactile feel, setting these models apart from traditional metal or plastic cases. This lightweight material enhances comfort for extended wear. I must say, after wearing much heavier, more expensive watches, I find the Bioceramic material refreshingly light—and I absolutely love it. It’s worth noting that it’s still two-thirds ceramic; it’s certainly not the “crappy plastic” some might lead you to believe.

The caseback of each watch is meticulously designed, featuring inscriptions of the Omega and Swatch logos, along with references to the specific MoonSwatch mission. Although it lacks the animated elements found in higher-end Speedmaster models, the caseback still honors the mission’s legacy through these engraved details, reinforcing the connection to space exploration. A closer look reveals Snoopy’s pawprint, marking the spot of the first lunar landing.

These watches feature a quartz movement, providing precision and reliability that align with Swatch’s commitment to accessible, high-quality watchmaking. The movement is housed within the Bioceramic case, which offers a sturdy and protective shell resistant to shocks and water. While the specific water resistance rating isn’t a key selling point for this model, it’s worth noting that the battery is replaceable. Plus, you can swim and shower with the watch—just remember to keep the crown closed.

Wrapping up, the Omega x Swatch Snoopy MoonSwatch ‘New Moon’ edition blends playful design with a serious nod to space exploration. Its standout features—Bioceramic case, moon phase complication, Super-LumiNova detailing, Velcro strap, and reliable quartz movement—make it a unique addition to both Omega and Swatch collections. This timepiece appeals to those who value style and substance equally. At $320, it might raise eyebrows among hardcore watch collectors who favor mechanical movements. However, it’s undeniably an accessible entry point for a watch that offers enduring enjoyment and value. Oh, and happy belated 74th birthday to Snoopy!

Chasing the Moon: My Quest for the Omega x Swatch MISSION TO THE SUPER BLUE MOONPHASE

]]>

The allure of the Omega x Swatch Mission to the Super Blue Moonphase watch pulled me from Dallas to Austin, a journey sparked by the promise of a rare astronomical event. The super blue moon, a captivating phenomenon that merges a supermoon and a blue moon, graces our skies only once every 10 to 20 years. Such rarity naturally inspired this limited-edition watch, which Swatch and Omega designed to celebrate the celestial event and their storied collaboration.

Designer: Omega x Swatch

Choosing a flight over the three-hour drive, I landed in Austin determined and excited, with temperatures soaring over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The journey to the Swatch store was filled with anticipation as I navigated the city, knowing that this unique timepiece awaited only a select few. Upon arrival, I joined a group of fellow enthusiasts, each driven by the desire to claim this beautifully crafted watch.

Swatch made the strategic decision to begin sales at 5 p.m., a time that coincided with the symbolism of the moonrise and added a layer of thematic significance to the event. This timing was ideal, allowing collectors to gather after work and transforming an ordinary evening into a momentous occasion.

The Mission to the Super Blue Moonphase was available at select Swatch locations across the U.S., including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, Houston, and Austin. These stores, each a destination for collectors, were carefully chosen to reflect the brand’s reach and dedication to providing access to its limited-edition pieces.

As I took my place as the sixth person in line, the camaraderie among collectors became tangible. Conversations about past releases, the rarity of the super blue moon, and the watch’s technical features filled the air, creating a sense of community among strangers united by a shared passion.

MISSION TO THE MOONPHASE – FULL MOON vs. MISSION TO THE SUPER BLUE MOONPHASE

The Swatch staff managed the crowd expertly, distributing water to keep spirits high despite the oppressive heat. They confirmed the rumors that stocks were limited—only a handful of watches would be available at each location. This news heightened the anticipation, as everyone in line understood the stakes.

Finally, the moment arrived. The doors opened, and we were ushered one by one into the store, our eyes immediately drawn to the centerpiece of the event: the Mission to the Super Blue Moonphase. The watch was displayed under carefully positioned lighting, emphasizing its striking design. Inside, the air conditioning provided relief from the oppressive heat outside, transforming the store into a sanctuary for the watch lovers who had endured the long wait.

The blue bioceramic case shimmered, and the panda dial—adorned with blue and silver opaline—commanded attention with its intricate details. The moon phase indicator at the 2 o’clock position beautifully captured the essence of the super blue moon, rotating to display various phases. At the same time, the hidden details emerged under UV light, revealing an extra layer of sophistication. This feature, alongside the pulsometer scale—traditionally used for measuring heart rates—added aesthetic and functional appeal to the watch.

With its light blue topstitching, the Velcro strap matched the bioceramic case perfectly, creating a cohesive and stylish look. However, as I had experienced with other models, the strap’s design had drawbacks. While visually appealing, the Velcro lacked a locking mechanism, which could be risky for those with active lifestyles. My business partner had even lost his Tiffany Dial MoonSwatch this way—a cautionary tale for potential buyers.

Securing the watch felt like a triumph. The cool touch of bioceramic against my wrist contrasted sharply with the day’s heat, yet the satisfaction of obtaining this rare piece made every moment worth it. Each glance at the dial now serves as a reminder of the excitement and dedication that marked the day.

For those considering this purchase, only ten days remain before the opportunity to buy the Mission to the Super Blue Moonphase directly from Swatch will vanish. After Aug. 19, the only option will be the aftermarket, where prices already exceed the $310 MSRP. The watch is a tangible connection to the rare event that inspired its creation, embodying the beauty and wonder of a unique celestial occurrence.

This timepiece tells a compelling story—a story of sustainability, innovation, and exquisite design. Backed by Hollywood icon and environmental advocate Leonardo DiCaprio, ID Genève has crafted a watch that uniquely combines elegance with eco-consciousness.

Designer: ID Genève

At first glance, the Circular 1 Grenat Dial captivates with its vibrant red sunburst dial, inspired by the rich tones of fine wine. This striking dial is housed in a case crafted entirely from 100% recycled stainless steel, demonstrating that luxury and sustainability coexist beautifully. The 41mm case, polished to a high sheen, offers a substantial yet comfortable fit designed to suit any occasion, whether a casual outing or a formal event.

What sets this watch apart is its aesthetics and commitment to sustainability. The strap, made from Nisiar vegan leather, is derived from grape marc, a byproduct of winemaking. This innovative material composition consists of 75% natural components, offering a luxurious feel without the environmental impact of traditional leather. The deep brown color of the strap comes from tannins extracted from various grape varieties, adding a unique story to the wrist.

Underneath its sophisticated exterior, the Circular 1 Grenat Dial is powered by a refurbished ETA 2824 automatic movement. By choosing to use a movement sourced from unsold stock, ID Genève embraces a circular approach, reducing waste while maintaining precision and reliability. The movement features a 38-hour power reserve and includes hour, minute, second, and date functions, all elegantly displayed on the intricate dial.

Each Circular 1 Grenat Dial element is designed with intention and care, from the 50-meter water-resistant case to the recycled sapphire crystal that protects the dial. These features, combined with local sourcing and environmentally friendly manufacturing processes, highlight ID Genève’s pioneering efforts in sustainable watchmaking.

The Circular 1 Grenat Dial watch is a symbol of change in an industry where fast fashion usually dominates. It defies conventional ideas of luxury by using more environmentally friendly materials and techniques. This watch isn’t just an accessory; it represents certain values and reflects a world that is progressing toward a more sustainable future.

For those seeking a timepiece that embodies style and substance, the ID Genève Circular 1 Grenat Dial Nisiar Limited Edition is an exceptional choice. It tells the time and the story of innovation, sustainability, and the future of luxury watchmaking.

The Chronograph I, designed by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, stands as an enduring symbol of functional and aesthetic innovation in watchmaking. Originating from the same principles that sculpted the Porsche 911, this watch has retained its iconic status since its debut in 1972. At a time when most chronographs were rendered in gold or silver, the Chronograph I’s all-black design distinguished itself with stark functionality, inspired by the clear, high-contrast instrument panels of the 911, designed to offer drivers precise readability under extreme conditions.

Designer: Porsche Design

Historical Design and Philosophy

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, profoundly influenced by his formative years in his grandfather’s design offices, adopted a design philosophy that emphasized honest, functional design. This ethos materialized in the Porsche 911, a vehicle renowned for its distinctive lines and performance-driven design. Tasked with designing a watch in 1972, Porsche aimed to create a piece that was unmistakably derived from the vehicle, embodying unrestricted functionality. The Chronograph I, with its matte black dial, high-contrast indices, and anti-reflective glass, marked a bold departure from conventional watch designs, reflecting the dashboard of the Porsche 911.

Studio F. A. Porsche

The integration of automotive elements like the red second hand and tachymeter, directly inspired by the car’s instrument panel, enhanced its aesthetic appeal and practical utility, transforming Chronograph I into the first “sports car for your wrist.” Despite initial controversies, its design philosophy resonated with those who valued clarity and functionality, setting a new industry standard.

Evolution to the Present

Today, the legacy of Chronograph I is celebrated through Chronograph 1 – All Black Numbered Edition. This modern iteration upholds the core elements that made the original groundbreaking while integrating contemporary materials and technological advancements. The design maintains its historical roots, with the black casing and dial emphasizing its racing DNA and updates like the Porsche Design Calibre WERK 01.140 movement ensuring precision and durability.

Chronograph 1 – All Black Numbered Edition

Produced in Porsche’s specialized facility in Solothurn, Switzerland, the watch continues to attract both watch collectors and automotive enthusiasts. Its high-quality craftsmanship and limited production of 1,000 pieces annually enhance its collectibility.

The Hodinkee 2024 Edition

Porsche Design has introduced the Chronograph 1 – Hodinkee 2024 Edition, expanding this heritage. Curated by Hodinkee, a leader in the watch platform sphere, this special edition merges the iconic design of the Chronograph I with the style of the 1970s, updated with modern technology. It features a COSC-certified Porsche Design calibre WERK 01.140, housed in a black titanium carbide-coated case with a matching titanium bracelet, ensuring both durability and style.

CHRONOGRAPH 1 – HODINKEE 2024 EDITION

This edition is distinguished by unique details such as the historical “1 Mile” graphic on the tachymeter scale and a bilingual day display in English and Japanese, underscoring its appeal to a global audience. Limited to just 350 pieces worldwide, it features the historic Porsche Design icon and Hodinkee lettering on the case back, marked as “TRILOGY – CHAPTER 1.”

CHRONOGRAPH 1 – HODINKEE 2024 EDITION

Each iteration of the Chronograph 1 encapsulates Porsche Design’s commitment to blending form and function, continuing to embody Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s vision by capturing the spirit of the Porsche 911 in a wearable form. Whether through the classic All Black Numbered Edition or the exclusive Hodinkee 2024 Edition, this timepiece remains a captivating tribute to timeless design and impeccable craftsmanship, securing its place in the annals of horological excellence.

The year was 1940. Thousands of Allied soldiers were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk, France. The enemy was closing in fast. Panic spread as the soldiers looked out to sea, hoping for rescue ships. With every tick of the clock, their chances of escape grew slimmer. The Germans were quickly advancing to the shores, effectively surrounding thousands of soldiers and trapping them in what could only be viewed as certain death. That was until nearly 700 boats started appearing on the horizon. Sailing over from the UK, these boats gave the Allied soldiers the escape route they needed. Among them, a British fireboat called the Massey Shaw was responsible for saving as many as 600 soldiers.

It’s estimated that over 300,000 British and French soldiers were rescued that day from an impending German massacre. To pay tribute to the boats that ventured out to rescue the soldiers, and the Massey Shaw fireboat in particular, William Wood designed the Dunkirk Watch. Inspired by the boat’s engine order telegraph, the Dunkirk Watch has a face featuring various commands that the captain would trigger while commandeering the boat’s engine.

Designer: William Wood

The Dunkirk Watch is perfect for history buffs and steamboat nerds who like wearing a relic of marine exploration on their wrists. The watch’s face gorgeously captures the details of the engine order telegraph seen on almost all boats from that time. The telegraph would have a handle that you could rotate to select one of multiple commands, allowing your boat to stay still or move ahead. The handle would have a hollow window, allowing you to ‘highlight’ an option on the telegraph – so to celebrate that, the watch boasts hollow outline-shaped hour and minute hands.

On the side of the watch, two red pipes reference the Massey Shaw’s firefighting system, comprised of multiple red pipes that pumped water to help douse fires. Inside, a Sellita SW200 movement powers the timepiece. The watch also comes with luminous markings on the dial and straps made from military leather as well as fabric from firefighter suits. Flip the watch over and you’re greeted with artwork on the back, capturing the tense scene of Operation Dynamo which rescued roughly 338,000 soldiers from the shores of Dunkirk. In the center of the artpiece is a small metal fragment pulled from the engine of the Massey Shaw, putting literal history on your wrist. The watch also has the message “We Will Remember Them” inscribed on the back, along with a serial number unique to each timepiece.

The Massey Shaw played a pivotal role in Britain’s history through the years. While it was best remembered for its role in Operation Dynamo, the London Fire Brigade Fireboat also helped save St. Paul’s Cathedral in London during the German Blitz. It’s said that planes dropped as many as 28 bombs on the cathedral in December of 1940, but the Massey Shaw continuously pumped water from the Thames, keeping the cathedral standing even after an intense bombing campaign. In 1947, the fireboat was one of many secret meeting locations that helped form what we know today as Britain’s NHS or National Health Service.

The Massey Shaw was retired from service in 1971, and now sits on London’s harbor, with a scheduled visit to Dunkirk in 2025 to mark the event’s 80-year anniversary. Aside from making the watch, William Wood also donated £10,000 to help repair and restore the Massey Shaw. The first 600 people to purchase the Dunkirk Watch will also receive a commemorative limited-edition Operation Dynamo coin, and will even have their names engraved on a plaque installed within the Massey Shaw.

The Dunkirk Watch starts at £3,995.00 GBP ($5100 USD approx), and delivers in November 2024. You can order yours on William Wood’s website.

For the Urwerk and MB&F fans on a budget, the MS1001-Ti does what those brands do best – it challenges the very archetype of a wristwatch on every level… but does so on a $319 price tag.

Take one glance at the MS1001-Ti watch from MECEXP and I guarantee you’ll be compelled to look again and again. The watch’s avant-garde design goes beyond its chiseled shape. Instead of one watch face, it sports two – in the form of linear windows on the left and right, with moving arrows that point at the hours and minutes respectively. The windows are separated by a metal channel that serves as branding, but also provides cover for the watch’s unique backlight, giving the entire timetelling experience a modern facelift. The watch itself boasts a titanium alloy outer casing, complete with sapphire crystals on the front… and on the inside, the entire watch runs on MECEXP’s own self-developed movement, drawing power from a lithium-ion battery that recharges using a contact-point charger like the ones you get with smartwatches. In short, there’s nothing conventional about the MS1001-Ti and that’s precisely what makes it so incredible.

I know it’s an overused metaphor but the MS1001-Ti does share a lot spiritually with the Cybertruck. It challenges existing norms, comes with a uniquely geometric design and a highly durable construction, and runs on a lithium battery. In short, it’s electric on the inside, and unconventionally edgy on the outside. The watch itself sports a machined titanium-alloy body, known for being both hypoallergenic and hyper-durable. The oddly appealing low-poly design puts the watch in a visual class of its own, while its linear time-telling experience instantly turns it into an iconic wristwatch.

The time-telling UX is a masterclass in its own right. The watch doesn’t come with rotating hands or a digital screen. Instead, it uses a screw-based linear flyback movement and a traveling arrow to help tell the time. This unorthodox experience doesn’t require a learning curve – simply put, the hour is indicated on the left, and the minutes on the right. CNC motors operate the rotating screw, which allows the arrow to travel up and down the hour or minute window. It’s an experience that just as satisfying to watch as it is easy to read. Clear, large, 3D numbers on either side make the time easy to read in broad daylight… and if you want some added flair, pressing the crown on the side triggers the watch’s blue backlight, allowing you to read the time at night too.

A lithium-ion battery powers the entire experience bridging the gap between horology and technology. The MS1001-Ti replaces the conventional spring with CNC motors, which utilize digital programming and digital tracking for time calibration. “The complicated mechanical movement of the watch is achieved through algorithmic programming, perfectly integrating modern intelligence with mechanical timekeeping,” say the folks at MECEXP. In short, this timepiece isn’t for traditionalists or purists.

The MS1001-Ti bases itself on the company’s MS1001 design from not too long ago. The upgraded variant now sports a titanium outer shell, making it more durable but simultaneously lighter than its predecessor, weighing a mere 86 grams or 3 ounces, while also boasting a marginally larger dial and display window. The display window is capped with anti-scratch sapphire crystal which also gives the watch up to 30 meters or 3ATM of water resistance. Meanwhile, fluoro rubber straps offer a classic yet sporty aesthetic with the added benefit of being water/weather resistant. The inner 270mAh battery lasts a respectable 35 days on a full charge, and a contact-based charging cable lets you recharge your watch in a jiffy.

Despite its groundbreakingly different design and movement, the MS1001-Ti starts at an affordable $319, which includes a classy packaging box, a charging cable, 2 years of warranty, and free global shipping.

Imagine the rugged, untamed landscapes of Iceland, where raw geometric forms meet delicate natural beauty. Inspired by this breathtaking scenery, Johan Link, a Swiss architecture student with an unyielding passion for design, set out on a remarkable journey. His goal was to create a timepiece that captured the essence of nature’s raw elegance and timeless charm. The culmination of his vision and meticulous craftsmanship is the LinkOne, a watch that effortlessly blends the rugged and the refined.

Designer: Johan Link

Johan Link’s journey to create the LinkOne was an intricate dance of creativity and precision. Months were spent sketching, iterating, 3D printing, and prototyping, all to achieve the perfect balance between form and function. The result is a distinctive watch that embodies the simplicity and elegance of nature while showcasing the innovative spirit of its creator.

At first glance, the LinkOne captivates with its black anodized aluminum case, a testament to both strength and style. Crafted from CNC-milled 6061-T6 aluminum, the case is not only durable but also boasts a bead-blasted and anodized finish, giving it a sleek, refined appearance. This robust exterior protects the intricate mechanics within, ensuring the watch’s reliability and longevity.

However, the true allure of LinkOne lies in its unique combination of materials. The watch features 3D-printed Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) straps, which provide a velvet-like texture for unparalleled comfort. These straps are more than just functional; they are a tactile delight, inviting the wearer to experience a new level of comfort and style.
