The idea that light can cure depression goes WAY beyond simple SAD lamps and light-therapy devices for people experiencing seasonal affective disorder during the dark months of winter.

Developed by the Vienna-based startup Syntropic Medical, this device harnesses light-based brain stimulation to offer a drug-free alternative for those who have not found success with conventional antidepressants. Light is shone into the eyes using a set of goggles, while a head-worn apparatus measures its effects – similar to using electromagnetic fields or certain sounds to treat pain, tinnitus, or depression. The approach builds on the premise that light therapy can enhance neuroplasticity—essentially, the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. For individuals who have struggled with the side effects of pharmaceuticals or seen little improvement from traditional treatments, this technology could offer a fresh path forward.

Designer: Syntropic

Syntropic’s device leverages flickering lights to target microglial cells in the brain, which play a crucial role in maintaining healthy neural circuits. By stimulating these cells, the device encourages them to remodel brain structures associated with depressive disorders. This method addresses a significant challenge in mental health care: some patients’ conditions remain unresponsive to drugs because those treatments may not directly target the underlying brain dynamics causing the disorder. The non-invasive nature of this technology also means it avoids the systemic side effects often linked to antidepressant medications, offering a more tolerable and potentially safer option for long-term use.

Syntropic’s breakthrough has already attracted significant attention and financial backing. In July 2024, the company secured €1.1 million in funding from the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), adding to earlier investments from Xista Science Ventures and AWS. This support not only validates the scientific foundation of the technology but also highlights the growing interest in non-pharmaceutical therapies for mental health. With more resources at their disposal, Syntropic Medical is poised to advance their device through clinical trials and bring it closer to widespread adoption. As the mental health field continues to explore innovative solutions beyond traditional medications, this light-based therapy could represent a crucial development for those seeking alternative ways to manage their depression effectively and safely.

]]>

In a significant medical breakthrough, the Texas Heart Institute and BiVACOR have successfully implanted the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart (TAH) in a human patient at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. This development marks a substantial advancement in treating severe heart conditions, particularly for patients with biventricular and univentricular heart failure, who are unsuitable candidates for traditional devices like left ventricular assist devices.

Designer: BiVACOR

The BiVACOR TAH features a titanium rotary blood pump utilizing magnetic levitation technology. This innovation minimizes the wear and tear commonly seen in traditional artificial hearts. With only one moving part, the TAH emulates the human heart’s function by efficiently pumping blood while reducing damage to blood cells.

The maglev technology allows the rotor inside the heart to operate without contacting other parts, reducing friction and extending the device’s lifespan. Inspired by high-speed trains, this technology enables the artificial heart to function quietly and smoothly, enhancing patient comfort. The TAH is designed to sustain patients until a suitable donor heart is available for transplant.

This successful implantation is part of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration study to assess the TAH’s safety and effectiveness in real-world conditions. Daniel Timms, founder and CTO of BiVACOR, noted that this technology brings us closer to providing more options for patients ineligible for traditional heart transplants.

Heart failure is a leading cause of death worldwide, affecting millions. In the U.S. alone, about 6.2 million adults suffer from heart failure. The National Institutes of Health estimate that up to 100,000 U.S. patients could immediately benefit from mechanical heart support like the TAH.

Dr. Joseph Rogers, president and CEO of the Texas Heart Institute, emphasized the importance of this new technology. Collaborating with BiVACOR and Baylor College of Medicine, they aim to revolutionize heart failure treatment and offer new hope to patients in need.

Comparing the Titanium Maglev Heart and the Biological Heart

The titanium maglev heart looks and functions quite differently from a natural human heart. Constructed from titanium, this heart implant features a strong, metallic design, which stands in stark contrast to the soft muscle tissue of a biological heart. The maglev heart’s sleek design includes various ports and connectors that allow it to work seamlessly with medical devices. Meanwhile, a biological heart has a more organic look, with textures and colors that highlight its living nature, without the industrial elements present in the titanium heart.

BiVACOR: The Total Artificial Heart, made of titanium

Design-wise, the maglev heart appears more mechanical, with visible joints and parts tailored for specific functions, resembling a machine more than an organ. Conversely, the biological heart is smooth and compact, with chambers and valves seamlessly flowing together without sharp edges or mechanical parts.

Functionally, the maglev heart includes technology for monitoring and control, allowing for potential remote adjustments. Its ports and cables are designed to connect to external devices. In contrast, the natural heart’s connections are biological, including arteries and veins, without external interfaces.

Size-wise, the titanium maglev heart may be larger than a biological heart due to the space required for mechanical components like motors and the magnetic levitation system. A biological heart is typically more compact, fitting efficiently within the chest cavity.

The titanium maglev heart shows how science and engineering can merge to provide new solutions for patients who cannot receive a biological heart transplant. Its design and features highlight advancements in medical devices, offering a promising option for those in need.

]]>

Imagine the constant challenge of navigating everyday life without the natural flexibility of your feet. This is the reality for many amputees who rely on prosthetic feet that can feel clunky and restrictive. These prosthetics often lack the ability to adapt to uneven terrain or provide the natural push-off needed for a smooth gait. However, a groundbreaking design from the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) is poised to change the game for amputees everywhere. The SoftFoot Pro is a prototype prosthetic foot that is a literal and metaphorical leap forward in prosthetic design, mimicking the structure and movement of the human foot. Unlike conventional prosthetics that prioritize sturdiness or offer minimal flexibility, the SoftFoot Pro boasts an ingenious design that offers human-like foot flexibility and dexterity… without a single motor, servo, circuit board, or battery.

Designer: Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia

Shedding the weight and complexity of motors and electronics, the SoftFoot Pro achieves impressive functionality through a clever combination of mechanics and materials. At its core is a mobile arch mechanism, crafted from lightweight yet robust titanium or aluminum alloy. This arch connects to five parallel chains, made from high-strength plastic segments that replicate the metatarsal and phalange bones of the human foot. Elastic connectors, acting like tendons, link the segments within each chain.

The brilliance of the SoftFoot Pro lies in the details. Running through each chain is an internal steel cable that anchors to the prosthetic’s heel. This cable, along with the elastic connectors, mimics the plantar fascia – the band of tissue in the human foot that stores and releases energy with each step. This ingenious design allows the SoftFoot Pro to absorb impact, propel the user forward with a natural push-off, and even conform to uneven surfaces. This enhanced flexibility translates to greater stability and a more natural gait for users.

Weighing in at a mere 450 grams (1 pound), the SoftFoot Pro is incredibly lightweight despite its ability to support users weighing up to 100 kg (220 lbs). Initial trials conducted at Hannover Medical School and the Medical University of Vienna have yielded promising results. Amputees who participated in the trials experienced a significant improvement in their gait, with increased balance and a more natural walking experience on various terrains.

The applications of the SoftFoot Pro extend beyond human users. Researchers have also successfully tested the design on robots, including the Anymal quadruped robot and the HRP-4 humanoid robot. This versatility highlights the potential of this design to revolutionize not just prosthetics but also the field of robotics.

]]>

Chiara Torterolo, a Master’s student in Product Design at ECAL, has developed an innovative concept called MedGum, which offers a revolutionary approach to medication delivery. Unlike typical student projects in the medical products subspecialty, Torterolo’s work targets the form of the medication itself, proposing a novel solution through chewing gum.

Designer: Chiara Torterolo

Scientists and medical researchers have long recognized chewing gums as a highly effective alternative to conventional drug administration methods like pills, tablets, and capsules. The MedGum project leverages this potential, integrating food production, medical research, and design to create a range of functional gums with additional health benefits. Chewing gum, as a medium for drug delivery, offers several advantages over traditional methods, including ease of use, improved patient compliance, and potentially faster absorption of active ingredients.

MedGum is meticulously designed to enhance the effectiveness of medication. The structure of the gum is tailored to improve the speed and dynamics of active ingredient absorption. By carefully designing the gum’s composition and structure, the MedGum project aims to optimize the release and absorption of medication, ensuring that it works more efficiently compared to traditional forms. This design innovation is particularly significant for medications that require rapid onset of action, as the chewing process can facilitate quicker absorption through the oral mucosa.

This is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It is specifically tailored to address various medical conditions such as stomach disorders, allergies, migraines, and oral injuries. Each type of MedGum is developed with a unique formulation to cater to these specific health needs. For instance, a MedGum designed for stomach disorders might contain active ingredients that soothe and heal the stomach lining, while a formulation for migraines could include rapid-acting pain relievers. This targeted approach ensures that patients receive the most appropriate treatment for their condition, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the medication.

One of the standout features of MedGum is its discreet and convenient nature. The new packaging design ensures that patients can take their medication without drawing attention. This aspect is particularly beneficial for individuals who may feel self-conscious about taking traditional medication in public settings. MedGum offers a level of privacy and convenience that is unmatched by conventional drug delivery methods, making it easier for patients to adhere to their medication regimen.

]]>

According to my friends who are already parents, one of the most difficult things to get their young kids to do is to drink medicine. Aside from the fact that most of the pills actually taste bad and may be too big for their little throats, it’s also hard to convince them to do something if they don’t really understand why they need to do so. Some actually use rewards just to get the kids to take their meds but there should be better ways to get through this every time they need to do it.

Designer: Fengrui Wang

The Singing Bottle is a concept for a different kind of pill packaging and dispenser for kids ages 6-10 to help them take their meds a bit more easily. It is shaped like those ship in a bottle things that your dad or uncle probably displayed. But instead of a ship, you get personalized pills and a corresponding paper card strip with an NFC tag attached which is the secret to getting the kids to get the pills down. The dispenser also has a built-in speaker in which the cards, which contain music and stories, can be played.

The idea is that parents need to purchase the first pack of 14-21 personalized pills from the pharmacy and the dispenser. Turn the handle to dispense the first pill, separate the card strip and then insert it into the NFC reader. The first card is actually inspiring words to get the kids to take the pill and explain why they need to do so. Every two days, a new strip is unlocked and this can be a story or a piece of music to serve as their “reward” for taking the pill.

This is a pretty interesting way to encourage children to take their much needed medicine. This concept will work with Dozer, a start-up that specializes in 3D medicine printing which is able tp provide personalized medicine which should be less expensive and maybe also makes the taste a bit better, since that’s one of the major reasons why kids don’t want to take their pills.

More than just the population problem, we are also facing a crisis in terms of care for the aging segments of that population. Traditional geriatric care centers are sometimes filled beyond capacity, and caring for elderly people living alone can be expensive and at times even risky. Futurists and visionaries would have us dream of a future where robots, whether humanoid or not, would take the place of household help, and we’re starting to see some of those rolling boxes in homes, often for less critical conveniences like bringing things from one place to another. Human care, however, is a very different matter entirely, so this concept design for a service robot and an advanced wheelchair duo tries to paint a different picture by making the experience look and feel a little bit more human and, therefore, more humane.

Designer: Sungmin Hwang

Geriatric patients living at home need more than just having things brought to them, which is what many home service robots are designed to do. They will also want to move around, on their own or with assistance, and motorized wheelchairs try to make that activity more convenient. These two mobility activities might be related, but they’re provided by two very different kinds of products. But rather than having disparate and disconnected machines, this design concept presents an integrated system that acts like a whole, even if they function separately.

The actual “companion” is a service robot that looks like a tall board with arms and wheels, unlike the common design that’s practically a self-driving cabinet. It has a simplified face, basically just eyes that can express emotions and a dot matrix display that can spell out words, but it’s enough to give it a more personable character. Rather than having shelves to put items on, the robot has harms and hands that can grab and hold objects to hand them over to the patient, making the action feel more personal rather than clinical.

The other half of the duo is a motorized wheelchair that’s designed as much for comfort as it is for mobility. In addition to the cushioned surfaces and curved parts, the chair features plenty of storage space not just for things but also for medicine. The patient can exercise their own agency by driving the wheelchair on their own, but it can also be pushed by the companion robot when it connects to the chair. This recreates the experience of having someone push their wheelchair, hopefully making them feel less lonely and less detached.

The “Companion” robot and wheelchair concept is designed with many of the existing technologies already available today, from self-navigating home robots to intelligent charging docks to precision robot hands for carefully grabbing objects. Of course, such a machine would still need to undergo rigorous testing, not to mention regulatory scrutiny given its medical applications, but it’s definitely an interesting take on what a home service robot can do, especially when it’s designed to take care of elderly people or people with mobility disabilities.

Every expectant mother embarks on a journey filled with joy, anticipation, and, understandably, a dash of apprehension. The responsibility of nurturing a new life brings with it a plethora of considerations, chief among them being maternal health. Recognizing this critical aspect, Perelel, a maternal health startup, has pledged a substantial $10 million towards closing the healthcare research gap, underscoring their commitment to maternal well-being.

Designer: Perelel

The journey of Perelel traces back to 2020 when Victoria Thain Gioia, Alex Taylor, and Dr. Banafsheh Bayati co-founded the company with a mission to provide expectant mothers with superior prenatal vitamin options. The inception of Perelel was deeply personal, as Gioia’s experience with her daughter’s cleft lip shed light on the critical link between folic acid deficiency and prenatal health. Meanwhile, Taylor’s own pregnancy journey underscored the challenges of researching and sourcing quality prenatal vitamins. With Dr. Bayati’s expertise as an obstetrician-gynecologist, Perelel formulated a line of prenatal vitamins tailored to each trimester, using high-quality ingredients to optimize maternal and fetal health.

However, Perelel’s vision extended beyond mere commercial success; it was deeply rooted in philanthropy. Today, the company fulfills its promise by announcing a substantial $10 million donation, a testament to its ethos of giving back. This donation will be directed towards two esteemed organizations: Magee-Womens Research Institute, dedicated to pioneering research in women’s health and reproductive biology, and Good+Foundation, which addresses family poverty and supports new mothers.

The significance of this donation extends beyond monetary value. Perelel’s contribution will be distributed over three years as in-kind product donations and grants, ensuring tangible support for vital research initiatives. This announcement comes on the heels of Perelel’s successful fundraising efforts, including a recent $6 million Series A funding from Unilever Ventures, supplemented by $4.7 million in seed funding last year.

For Perelel, giving back is not an afterthought but a fundamental principle. Victoria Thain Gioia emphasizes, “From day one, giving was a very clear line item for us.” The company meticulously integrates giving into its financial models, allocating a percentage of sales toward philanthropic endeavors. Alex Taylor echoes this sentiment, highlighting Perelel’s commitment to scaling its giving as the company expands its reach. “Vitamins keep the lights on,” Taylor affirms, “but we stand for so much more.”

As Perelel continues to scale its operations and influence, its unwavering commitment to bridging healthcare research gaps remains steadfast. With each sale, the company not only illuminates the path to maternal well-being but also catalyzes transformative change in women’s health research. Through their actions, Perelel epitomizes the profound impact that businesses can wield when driven by a sense of purpose and compassion.

In a landscape where niche yet crucial topics like maternal health often go overlooked or insufficiently addressed, Perelel’s compassionate dedication stands out as a beacon of hope. It’s a refreshing sight to witness empathetic individuals recognizing the importance of this sector, and it’s even more inspiring that it’s predominantly led by women, adding an empowering cherry on top to their noble cause, illuminating a path toward a healthier, more equitable future for all mothers and their precious babies.
